Lake Ohau. Ahhhh. It’s got to be one of the most atmospheric and scenically stunning parts of the South Island, right?
It had been so long since I’d made the lonely drive up to the mountains, a good 13 years – and as I neared closer to Lake Ohau, the sky darkened and beautiful waves of rain travelled down the lake to meet me.
I had been worried all week, with the forecast for the weekend looking horrific – gale force winds and torrential rain. Not ideal for a wedding anywhere, let alone the mountains! But when I realised how amazing Lake Ohau could look in even the worst weather, all my worries left me and I found myself secretly hoping for a little bit of wild weather for the next day.
Claire and Niall had chosen Lake Ohau for their love of the outdoors.
Since moving to New Zealand from Northern Ireland a few years ago, they have been immersing themselves in our outdoors every chance they get. So sharing some of the beautiful landscape with their friends and family from around the world seemed like the perfect plan for their wedding day, and a chance for everyone to unwind for a weekend skiing and relaxing, while celebrating the nuptials.
The day of the wedding dawned overcast, but just before the ceremony the clouds cleared into brilliant sunshine – perfectly timed for just fifteen minutes before the skies broke into a downpour. Claire and Niall and I raced to the car and drove up the lake, stopping at a patch of Beech forest to shelter from the rain.
As we started shooting, the sun came out again – Claire and Niall were caught in a beautiful sunshower and I got that ‘wild weather’ I’d been hoping for.
Claire and Niall, congratulations – I’ve so enjoyed photographing with you two and wish you both the very best for a life long happy marriage!
